2026 Trick-or-Treating Guide: Halloween Hours in Chicago's South & Southwest Suburbs

🎃 Halloween is almost here! If you're wondering what time trick-or-treating starts in your neighborhood, I've got you covered!

Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and communities throughout Chicago's south and southwest suburbs are getting ready for an evening filled with costumes, candy, decorated houses, and family fun.

As a local REALTOR® serving Joliet, Plainfield, Shorewood, Oswego, and surrounding communities, I love sharing helpful local resources—especially around the holidays!

Whether you're staying in your neighborhood or visiting family and friends in a neighboring suburb, here's your 2026 Halloween trick-or-treating guide featuring 10 communities throughout Will, Kendall, and DuPage counties.

2026 Halloween Trick-or-Treating Hours by Town

All hours below are for Saturday, October 31, 2026.

Last reviewed October 27, 2026. Hours are subject to change. Please check your municipality's official website or social media before heading out.

What Time Should You Start Trick-or-Treating?

You'll notice that Halloween hours vary quite a bit between communities.

Some suburbs, including Crest Hill, begin at 3 PM, while others, such as Joliet and Plainfield, start at 4 PM.

Several communities also offer extended trick-or-treating hours until 8 PM, giving families more flexibility to enjoy Halloween festivities.

For younger children, starting earlier in the afternoon may be more comfortable. Older children may enjoy heading out closer to sunset, when neighborhood decorations and glowing jack-o'-lanterns really come to life!

Halloween Safety Tips for Families

Before heading out to collect candy, here are a few reminders to help keep everyone safe:

  • Stay visible: Carry flashlights, glow sticks, or reflective accessories, especially after sunset.

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks: Always look both ways before crossing the street.

  • Stick together: Younger children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Check costumes: Make sure costumes and masks don't obstruct vision or create tripping hazards.

  • Visit participating homes: A porch light is generally a good indication that a homeowner is welcoming trick-or-treaters.

  • Check candy: Inspect treats before children eat them, and be mindful of food allergies.

And for those driving through residential neighborhoods on Halloween, please slow down and keep an extra eye out for children!

Celebrating the Communities We Call Home

One of my favorite things about living and working in Chicago's southwest suburbs is how much character each community has.

From decorated neighborhoods in Joliet and Plainfield to seasonal events in Oswego, Shorewood, Yorkville, and the surrounding towns, there are so many ways to enjoy the holidays close to home.

And while I spend most of my time helping people buy and sell real estate, I also love sharing local restaurants, community events, neighborhood guides, and resources that help people enjoy the places they call home.

Whether you're a longtime resident or new to the area, I hope this guide makes planning your Halloween a little easier!
